Tips to Make Moving Into A New Apartment Easier

Just this past week, I moved into a new apartment and with that came a rollercoaster of emotions, a shattered bank account, and a sore back. Who knew that moving into a new place wasn’t just about the fun decorating but also about unloading hundreds of boxes up flights of stairs and inconvenient spaces...I guess I chose not to think of the hard stuff (until it came).

Thank goodness for my dad and grandpa who spent their entire Friday making trips to the storage unit and up flights of stairs. Otherwise, moving in would have taken me years. Although I knew moving would be a whole process, I did not imagine it would take so long to move into a 2x2 space. But, on a positive note, it came with a fresh start, a great new place with even better roomies. And it came with a learning experience, some tips and tricks that I want to share with you.

1. Keep It Simple

The number one most important thing that I learned while moving into my new place is that I have too much stuff.. that I do not need (or use). While unpacking the many boxes, I realized that if I had only done a deep clean and got rid of all the clothes and knick knacks that I never use, moving in would have taken me half the time. I say this because next time you are moving and thinking about packing that jacket that you have never worn...think twice. You will likely never wear it and it will just take up more storage space that you could be using for other things. Keep it Simple. This is especially important for college apartments, studios in the city, and dorms in which space is extremely limited. The more time that you spend cleaning out the stuff that you never use (before moving), the less time it will take you to move into a new place and stay clean and organized.

PSA: Extra stuff that you do not use causes clutter. When you are in a small space, it is so easy for a room to look cluttered. With just a couple misplaced items, your room will start to look messy. Keep it simple by only keeping items that you are absolutely in love with.

2. Pick a Theme and Stick to It

It is so easy to get carried away with room decorating ideas, I personally get tempted to purchase any decor that looks cute in a store. I get it, decorating is the most fun part of moving to a new place and we tend to overdo the decor, but it is important to keep it simple. Speaking from experience, your room could easily look like a cluttered mess with too much going on if you overdo the decorations. Pick a theme that you like best and stick to it. Before going to a store and getting overwhelmed with all the decor options, take a look at your room space and plan it out. Pick the few decorations that will add to the theme of your room. Do not let the million other ideas that just popped into your head after visiting Hobby Lobby distract you. This will help you to not overdo it. Choosing a modern aesthetic for a smaller space can make the room feel more organized and minimalist because of the clean, straight line designs. Check out ZUO’s furniture for some room inspo.

3. Plan your Storage Space

If you are like me, you have more clothes than space to store it all. It is important to look at the storage space that you have available and make the most of it. Consider adding in closet storage space that will help you stay organized and fit more clothing in your super impractical closet. Another life hack is to roll up your clothing rather than folding it, which will allow for more space. If you can’t fit all your clothes in the closet, consider adding a dresser which could also add to the decor and style of your room. A coat rack is another great option for more storage; Put your favorite clothing pieces on the rack and I promise that it will also add personality to the room.

After the emotional and physical stress of moving into my new apartment, I realized that these are the best tips I can give someone before moving into a new place. These tips will help reduce stress and make the move in process more efficient. Now that I am finally settled in, I am happy and as organized as can be. And even if you are not moving, these tips can help you reorganize your home to make it glow. Try it out!
